When the car is idling at a red light, and there are popping sounds similar to air blasts or backfires, what's happening?

When turning on the air conditioning in my 2006 Previa ACR50, I occasionally hear this sound. Can any experts help explain what's happening? Has anyone experienced a similar issue, and what could be the cause? It's a 2.4.
