My Peugeot automatic 308 struggles to go up a steep hill even when I accelerate. Could there be an issue with my car?

Peugeot 206, 1.6L, automatic/manual transmission, 2006 model. The acceleration is very slow, and when you give it more gas, the RPM goes up, but the speed doesn't catch up. What's going on? Can any experts help explain this? Thanks!
